The new exhibition at the Edmond-Charlot media library in Pézenas features some twenty plates from the three works by Camus illustrated by Jacques Ferrandez: L’Hôte, L’Étranger and Le Premier Homme.

Jacques Ferrandez was born in Algiers in 1955. After graduating from the École des Arts Décoratifs in Nice, he turned to illustration and comics. In 1987, he began Carnets d’Orient, a fresco on the history of the French presence in Algeria, which he completed twenty years later. He then adapted Camus’s short story L’Hôte in 2009, before masterfully transposing L’Étranger in 2013. He received the 2019 Historia prize for historical comics for Le Premier Homme, the autobiographical novel by Albert Camus.

“Putting Camus? work into images means weaving the invisible threads that link me to him, and better understanding what this shared history means to the deepest part of me.”
