Visit the bunkers of the ‘Mediterranean Wall’!
Following the Allied landings in North Africa in November 1942, Hitler ordered the invasion of the so-called ‘Free’ French zone in the south. Just as they had done on the Atlantic coast, over 900 bunkers were built along the Mediterranean coast, the ‘Südwall’ (the Mediterranean Wall), including nearly a hundred in the commune of Agde and its headland. La Tamarissière, a potential landing site, was heavily fortified…
These military structures are emblematic of the Second World War and particularly of the little-known period following November 1942, which saw the invasion of the so-called ‘Free’ zone in the south by German troops, until its liberation by Allied troops who landed near Toulon in August 1944.
