The Roque-Haute nature reserve, located between Portiragnes and Vias in the Hérault department, is a 154-hectare ecological treasure nestled on an ancient volcano and basalt plateau. Its geological wealth is reflected in the presence of rare volcanic rocks and 215 temporary pools. The site is home to exceptional biodiversity, with over 400 plant species, many of which are protected. This wealth of flora has attracted botanists for more than a century, thanks to the presence of a rare species of pubescent fern, the rough-haired fern, discovered and described in 1860, as well as original wetland varieties such as hare's-beard, Durieu's-beard and small hawk's-beard. Its fauna is just as remarkable: reptiles, insects and amphibians cohabit in this unique Mediterranean ecosystem. Roque-Haute is a sanctuary for rare species, both flora and fauna, offering a valuable insight into Mediterranean natural environments.
The reserve is located on private property and is not open to the public.
