Category(ies) : Natural wonder
The Grande Maïre natural site stretches over 400 hectares between the Canal du Midi and the sea, and immerses us in an environment similar to that of the Camargue, a mosaic of natural environments: dunes, lagoons, salt meadows, reed beds(...) populated by birds, horses and bulls bred at the Grand Salan manade. Remarkable for the wealth of flora and fauna it harbors, it is classified as a Zone Naturelle d'Intérêt Faunistique et Floristique and protected under the Natura 2000 network's "habitat" directive. It harbors a priceless ecological treasure: the Spanish iris. This is the only place in France where it can be observed. These violet or bluish flowers with a yellow stripe bloom in June. Highly protected, it is strictly forbidden to pick it. There are 3 signposted itineraries starting from Portiragnes-Plage or Portiragnes Village. On each route, explanatory panels help you to understand your surroundings. Guided tour every Wednesday at 6pm in July and August.
