Following the Allied landings in North Africa in November 1942, Hitler ordered the invasion of the so-called “Free” French zone in the South. It is a warlike building which is symbolic of the Second World War and particularly of the little known period after November 1942 which saw the invasion of the so-called “free” southern zone by German troops, until its liberation by the Allied troops landed near Toulon in August 1944.
