‘L'Espérance 1881: The Story of a Rebirth’

Agde

This exhibition traces the history and restoration of the Espérance 1881, a 19th-century fishing boat from Agathos.

Programme

After 150 years, this historic monument underwent a meticulous restoration at the marine carpentry workshop of the Narbonnaise en Méditerranée Regional Nature Park, which was completed in December 2025.
The exhibition traces the origins of the ‘bateau-boeuf’ and the practice of this fishing technique in the 18th and 19th centuries, before exploring the unique history of L’Espérance 1881, from Agde to the canals of Northern Europe via Sète, Nice and Monaco.
Finally, it presents the various stages of its restoration, highlighting the traditional shipbuilding skills employed.
