The Musée Agathois
The museum of popular arts and traditions retraces life in Agde from Antiquity to modern times.
It was founded by the Escolo dau Sarret (School of the "Sarret", a typical hat worn in Agde) and has a fascinating collection presented in 24 rooms: history and folklore of the town, religious art, winemaking and maritime activities, reconstructions of domestic interiors, paintings, pottery, costumes, etc.
The museum visit includes:
-
Archaeology
Agde’s history is based on Ancient Greece. The museum houses many archaeological remains from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, including doliums, amphorae, Greek and Roman pottery, etc.
-
Maritime activity
Models of boats, documents, goods brought back from voyages, reconstructions and paintings telling the story of Agde, which was one of the largest ports on the Mediterranean up to the 18th Century.
-
Folklore
The refined costumes worn by the ladies of Agde, and their accessories, festivals (water jousting, “danse des treilles”, etc.) and reconstructions of domestic interiors illustrating traditional life in Agde.
