The Château Laurens

Presentation

The Château Laurens

This former 12-hectare farm became an island in the 17th Century during the construction of the Canal du Midi.

Bordered by the Canalet, the Hérault and the Canal du Midi, Belle-Isle has an outstanding situation with its parc, it’s a real oasis of coolness.
A footbridge crosses the Canalet to give access to the estate and its château, built between 1898 and 1901 by Emmanuel Laurens, heir to a vast fortune, a great traveller and art-lover.

He decided to base his château on memories of his amazing journeys.

The architecture is neo-classical (colonnades, balusters, terraced roofs) while the ornamentation is Art Nouveau, with a profusion of stained glass, wrought iron, paintings and colours of oriental inspiration.

The château is now the property of the Agde Council. It is currently being restored and at this time, just the parc is open to the public.
