10 districts, 10 atmospheres

Le Cap d'Agde consists of several districts. Each which its own style and atmosphere, between the pine trees, oleander bushes and sandy beaches. 

• Rochelongue
  A combination of modernity and the Mediterranean, with a unique view of Fort Brescou.
  Accommodation: medium-sized villas, holiday residences of 4 to 6 storeys and camping to the west.
• Richelieu
  A large, fine sandy beach and many water sports and leisure activities.
  Accommodation: terraced houses and holiday residences, mostly with 2 or 3 storeys.
• Le Port
  The living heart of the resort with its lively quaysides, small squares and shops.
  Accommodation: Mostly holiday residences of 3 to 4 storeys.
• La Colline St Martin
  Its hillsides, covered with Mediterranean vegetation, are also residential.
  Accommodation: villas and small holiday residences of 3 to 4 floors.
• La Pinède
  The green heart of the resort with cultural and sporting facilities.
  Accommodation: villas and small single-storey holiday residences.
• La Roquille
  A peaceful area, beside a large beach and the greenery of Lano Public Park.
  Accommodation: small holiday residences of 1 or 2 storeys and holiday villages.
• Le Môle
  Mediterranean atmosphere guaranteed in the busy shopping area of the 'allée de la Flânerie' and on the beach.

• Les Falaises
  This area is typical of the region with a rocky volcanic promontory, and pretty creeks along the coast. It offers a beautiful view during a stroll on land or an excursion at sea.

• L'Avant-port / L'Ile des pêcheurs
  An island, a small fishing port and marina, the Richelieu jetty and the sea nearby.

Le Cap d'Agde : past and present
A lava flow dating back to about 1 million years ago created Cap d’Agde and its cliffs.  In 1629, Cardinal Richelieu envisaged the building of a large port, which the kingdom of France lacked in the ‘Golfe du Lion’. The death of Richelieu in 1642 slowed down the work, which was abandonned in 1651.  But the dream of a large port didn’t die….

• In 1960, there were just a few buildings in the area known today as ‘Le Vieux Cap’ (the old town), situated in the midst of huge sandy beaches.
  Three centuries after Richelieu, the government once more began to develop the coast. In the 1960s, the ‘Mission Interministérielle d'Aménagement Touristique du Littoral Languedoc-Roussillon’ (Inter-ministry mission for Tourist development on the Languedoc-Roussillon coast) was created.  Chaired for more than 20 years by Pierre Racine, a member of the Council of State, it was given the task of developing 6 tourist resorts and making Languedoc-Roussillon a holiday destination.
  The creation of Le Cap d’Agde was approved on 15th June and 31st October 1963 by rulings of the Agde Town Council.
• In 1968, the government and Agde Council signed an agreement with SEBLI (Société d'Equipement du Biterrois et de son Littoral) to complete the designs and the work, market the land and finance the amenities.  Work began in 1969 under the direction of Jean Miquel, SEBLI’s director, and in line with plans drawn up by chief architect Jean Lecouteur. 
  The concept was inspired by the typical character of villages in Languedoc-Roussillon, and paid particular attention to architectural unity, diversity, colour harmony and alternating busy and quiet areas.  The resort gradually grew like an amphitheatre around the marina.
• 1969 : work started with the development of the marina and the Saint-Martin port district. The resort then developed on the East side: La Môle, La Roquille, the naturist village, the green open spaces of La Clape….  
• 1982 : start of the development of the Richelieu district (West side).  The next decade was marked by the opening of leisure facilities: Aqualand, the Musée de l’Ephèbe, the international golf course, Aquarium, Leisure Island with cinema, discotheques, casino...
• 1990 : the final stage began at Rochelongue, around the Mail de Rochelongue.   

Today, Agde ranks as the number one French tourist resort for the number of people it can accommodate, which is around 175,000.
